This Luger is a Commercial model, with no markings or inspection stamps on this side of the pistol. In 1908, there were about 9,000 Commercial and 20,000 Military Lugers manufactured. The serial number range for the Commercial model was 39,000 to 71,500, and this pistol has serial number 40,764.
This Luger is missing the hold open latch, which holds the toggle-lock assembly in the open position after the last bullet is fired from the magazine. This makes it faster to reload the first bullet after replacing the magazine. The hold open latch was installed starting in 1914, but most of the prior models were refitted with this latch. It is rare for a Luger to have escaped this procedure. Also missing is the stock lug, used for attaching a shoulder stock. The stock lug was standard on the Luger, also starting in the 1914 models.
